2023 Jory Mason 1-Day Workshop

Creating Expressive Art with Pastels
Blustering Color copy.jpg

Let’s explore painting with expressive color and strong compositions. Emphasis will be on developing exciting art, not just copying what we see. Through a series of fun exercises, we will look at maintaining values while developing interesting color palates. There will be a positive group critique at the end of the day.

Intention: Why do you want to paint this? Is there a mood or feeling you want to convey? Is there one area that you want to emphasize and make your focal point? How do you want the viewer’s eye to move through your piece?

Design/Composition: How do you address elements such as design, value, format, and dominance in the early stages of your painting?

Color: How do you find the most creative and glorious color combinations?

Completion: Ahh, the big dilemma... What to do next and when to stop are frequently asked questions. In some ways, knowing when you’re done is intuitive—you just have a feeling. But it’s a feeling that’s gained with experience. It is easy to go too far or stop too soon. Knowing a few basic questions to ask will help determine if you need to do more, or if you need to stop.
